For many years, the Essen University Hospital has successfully focused on three main areas: oncology, transplantation and the cardiovascular system, as well as areas of research in immunology, infectious and translational neurology and behavioural sciences.

The West German Cancer Centre has been recognised as one of the best in the country since 2009 and today is the largest tumour centre in Germany. Interdisciplinarity and networking are important criteria for success in treating oncological cases.

The Organ Transplant Department is the leading international transplantation centre. The UKE is one of the few university hospitals that transplants all vital organs: kidney, liver, pancreas, heart and lungs. Special attention is paid to kidney and liver transplantation.

The Department of Cardiology and Cardiac Surgery is the national centre of the cardiovascular system that provides maximum care and is designed to research, diagnose and treat diseases of the heart and vascular system. The centre is unique in comprising not only the departments of cardiology and angiology, neurology, thoracic and cardiovascular surgery, pediatric cardiology and vascular surgery, but also institutes of pathophysiology, pharmacology and cardiovascular mechanisms.

Highly qualified diagnostics, therapeutic processes and speedy implementation of innovative solutions for the benefit of patients are the key principles of the UKE.

Research of infectious diseases is conducted in the West German Center for Infectious Diseases, which opened its doors in 2013. The newly created interdisciplinary centre is the link between the institutes and clinics at the University Hospital Essen, which are engaged in research, prevention, diagnostics and treatment of infectious diseases.
