Three Main Advantages of Treatment in Germany

High level of professionalism and qualification of doctors

In Germany, future medical specialists must study well in order to be accepted to the university. They will have 6 years of hard academic study and another 6 years of practical training. Only then will they be able to work as doctors in the German healthcare system.
1

Clinical equipment and advanced treatment technologies in Germany

Medical technologies in German clinics allow accurate diagnostics and effective therapy, especially in the field of innovative modern medicine and oncology. In order to constantly improve diagnostics and therapy, clinics in Germany are fitted up with the most modern medical equipment in all specialised departments for each field of medicine.
2

Comfortable inpatient rehabilitation in Germany

Intensive rehabilitation is a very important element of healthcare in Germany, as it ensures a full recovery. The goal of this healthcare measure is to restore the patient's quality of life. Therefore, the Germans created exclusive clinics and rehabilitation outpatient clinics with comfortable living conditions and special nutrition methods.
3

Clinics in Germany

German clinics offer an exceptionally high standard of modern treatment. Qualified, dedicated medical staff, innovative medicine, interdisciplinary collaboration of German physicians, specialised centres, patient-oriented services, individual care and sensitive counselling for patients and their families — all this ensures a high level of German medicine and patient satisfaction. Interdisciplinary medical centres in Germany also offer comprehensive examination and therapy methods.

Germany is becoming an increasingly popular choice for patients seeking treatment abroad. The high quality of medical care, strict ethical standards and quick access to specialists make it an attractive place for medical care. Treatment in Germany also has excellent value for money. Germany is not the cheapest medical destination in the world, but the cost of healthcare in Germany is significantly lower than in many other industrialised countries, especially the US. And in 40% of cases, the final cost of treatment in Germany will be lower than in CIS countries. This is achieved due to the fact that the prices for treatment in German clinics are transparent, and additional costs for stimulating medical personnel are excluded as a phenomenon.

Types of German clinics — state, private, charitable

As part of the healthcare system in Germany, each of the 16 German states shares responsibility with the central government for their clinics. There are three types of hospitals in Germany (Krankenhauser):

State clinics in Germany (Offentliche Krankenhauser) are administered by local or federal government agencies. These include university hospitals in Germany (55% of the total number of hospitals).

Charitable hospitals (Frei gemeinnutzige Krankenhauser) are run by churches or German Red Cross organisations (~38%).

Private clinics (Privatkrankenhauser) are run by companies (nearly 7%). As a rule, practicing doctors with solid experience open their highly specialised private clinics.

Why patients choose Germany

Advanced Level of German Healthcare System ✓

The German medical system is one of the most advanced in the world. All medical services and prices for treatment are regulated at the state level: German hospitals must be approved by certain certificates:

  • German Institute for Standardisation (DIN).
  • Collaboration for Quality and Transparency in Healthcare (KTQ-GmBH).
  • Telemedicine for a Mobile Society (TEMOS).
Clinics in Germany are also certified by ESMO (European Society for Medical Oncology) and JCI (Joint Commission International). These certifications assure patients that all medical procedures are safe and meet the highest quality standards.

Robotic Surgery ✓

Clinics in Germany are equipped with high-precision robotic systems.

Among them there is the Da Vinci robot which performs operations through incisions up to 1 cm. It is used for the surgical treatment of cancer of the prostate, bladder, kidneys, and even for the use of catheters in the case of diagnosing cardiac arrhythmia. EndoAssist, LapMan, Freehand devices replace the surgeon's assistant. They allow you to shorten the patient's recovery period, reduce the risk of complications and blood loss.

Availability of Innovative Technologies ✓

Research centres operate as part of university clinics in Germany. They develop innovative treatment methods and implement them into the therapy program. For example, doctors use the Trilogy system and TrueBeam STx linear accelerators to destroy malignant tumours. The devices act on the tumour without affecting healthy tissue.

Original Medications ✓

German doctors provide treatment in accordance with international protocols. Specialists use only original medications specially made for the member countries of the European Union.

Main medical problems to be treated in Germany

Germany is a top destination for patients who have complex illnesses and are willing to pay for high quality treatment and results. Usually foreign patients are sent to Germany for the treatment of diseases of the following specialties:

Treatment of Oncology

Oncology is the main specialty for medical tourism. For the treatment of cancer in Germany, there are 43 oncological centres that specialise in the treatment of more than 300 types of oncological diseases. German doctors use targeted and immunotherapy drugs. They affect cancer cells, but do not affect healthy ones.

The average cancer recovery rate in Germany is 82% for men and 87% for women.

Cardiology and Cardiac Surgery

More than 120,000 successful heart surgeries are performed annually in German clinics. German cardiac surgeons operate through small incisions. Doctors perform surgery through a 5 cm intercostal incision (traditional 20 cm) and replace heart valves through a catheter using TAVI.

Neurosurgery

German doctors treat herniated discs, tumours of the brain and spinal cord using safe methods. According to statistics, only 50% of patients with hernias are prescribed surgical treatment. The success rate for this intervention is over 90%. Due to the high recovery rate, neurosurgery is one of the main specialties for treatment in Germany.

Neurosurgeons use endoscopic and laser techniques to remove tumours. Some growths can be removed without incisions through natural openings such as the nose. Doctors perform operations under the control of neuronavigation, which increases the accuracy of the movements of neurosurgeons.

Orthopedics and Sports Rehabilitation

The main feature of orthopedic treatment in Germany is the vast experience of doctors. More than 11,150 orthopedic and sports medicine specialists are currently practicing. They perform knee and hip replacement using a minimally invasive method through small incisions up to 10 cm, in the case of traditional surgery - up to 30 cm. Doctors install endoprostheses using robotic surgical systems. The systems help to coordinate the movements of the surgeon and install the endoprosthesis with 100% accuracy.

As a result, the small length of the incision and the accuracy of the operation minimise the associated risks and significantly reduce the period of postoperative rehabilitation.

Costs for Treatment in Germany — Price List of Medical Services

Many patients do not consider treatment in Germany because they think it is expensive. In fact, prices in German clinics for individual procedures are indeed more expensive than in Eastern Europe, but the total cost of treatment is lower. This is achieved through an integrated approach to the preparation of treatment programs, and the absence of constant additional fees from patients, as is the case in the CIS countries.

In general, the actual price of treatment in Germany, even taking into account the cost of air travel and accommodation of an accompanying person in a hotel, will be higher, on average, by 15-30% compared to the prices for treatment in the patient's own country. At the same time, the difference in the quality of the treatment itself is incomparable. The trend is that the more complex medical intervention is required, for example, heart surgery, neurosurgery, arthroplasty, the cheaper the treatment in Germany ends up being. In addition, we should not forget: German doctors treat difficult cases.

If there is no hope for therapy in your home country, which may be of deprived of high-precision equipment and the latest techniques, it is worth contacting Germany.
They will perform miracles for you.

pricing factors

Pricing Factors for Treatment in Germany

  1. The patient's diagnosis, anamnesis, the desired effect is surgery or drug treatment.
  2. Length of stay in the clinic and type of ward. The average cost of staying in a 1-bed ward is from 96.00 euros per day.
  3. The region where the clinic is located. Local legislative acts that allow clinics to set their own prices for diagnostics, treatment, rehabilitation
  4. Clinic rating, its annual marketing expenses, investments in research activities and equipment. Usually prices in university clinics are higher by 5-25%, but this cost is offset by higher quality of treatment, especially when it comes to complex and rare diseases that require the latest research or ultra-modern robotic equipment to be treated.
  5. The professor's rating, their scientific activity and demand as a specialist affect the cost of treatment. If you choose conventional medical care (without the involvement of a professor and his team), the price of treatment will be 15-40% lower.
  6. The cost of treatment in Germany is strongly influenced by the presence of international departments in the clinic. They organize treatment for patients from abroad. If clinics outsource this activity to partners (e.g. UNICLINICSⓇ), the price of treatment will be significantly lower, up to 50% of the base cost.
  7. There are at least 15 more factors that affect the prices of treatment in Germany. These subtleties depend on each individual case and require the involvement of medical auditors to analyse the cost and all services included in the preliminary invoice. Contact us for a consultation so that we can determine the exact price in your case.

The German government regulates prices for treatment

Since 2004, a unified system for calculating the cost of treatment in clinics has been operating in Germany. This pricing approach is called DRG (Diagnosis Related Groups) and consists in the fact that more than 1,500 cases of treatment have been standardized and the average costs of clinics for them have been calculated.
Final cost of treatment in Germany will include all the peculiarities of a particular case.

The DRG system applies to all clinics in the country that have a state license. The Hospital Financing Act (§ 17 KHG) clearly states that the cost of treatment must be the same for all patients.
As providers of medical services to the population in their regions in huge numbers, German clinics have long learned to optimize the costs of treating typical cases, which are included in the DRG.

Thus, the cost of staying in the clinic does not depend on the amount of medical services provided, medicines, days of stay in the ward, but on the individual DRG number of the patient multiplied by the clinic coefficient.

A unique DRG-number for a patient is calculated based on the individual factors of a person: diagnosis (classification according to ICD 10), necessary medical procedures - surgery, chemotherapy, etc.; patient's age; factors that complicate treatment (comorbid, chronic diseases); the cost of implants or special medicines (for example, as in the case of PSMA therapy for prostate cancer, when Lu-177 is delivered on order). This DRG number is multiplied by the clinic coefficient — a multiplier that depends on the region where the clinic is located, its rating, and other factors.

How much money do I need to take with me?

Here is our reply to the most frequently asked question
If you are going to Germany for treatment under the UNICLINICSⓇ program, then the cost that will be calculated for you before the start of the medical program will include absolutely all expenses — the required number of days of stay in the clinic, food, medical staff services, necessary procedures, medicines, consumables materials, translation services, transfer, flight. In this case, no one will have to pay extra at the clinic for anything.
We usually recommend that our patients have €1,500-3,000 in reserve. This is in case you need to carry out control diagnostics or there will be time for a city tour.

If patients book treatment in Germany in another way, it is necessary to have about €10,000 with them, in case of complications or unexpected expenses.

About Germany — best quality of treatment in Europe

Located in the heart of Europe, Germany borders on nine neighbors — the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, France, Switzerland, Austria, Czech Republic, Poland and Denmark. With many lively cosmopolitan cities including Berlin, Hamburg, Munich and Cologne, as well as the natural beauty of the Black Forest, the Alps, the Rhine and Danube rivers, Germany has plenty of opportunities to make your treatment memorable not only with ultra-modern German clinics, but also with natural and architectural beauty of the country.

History and Sights

Visiting Germany: a lot of vivid impressions
The turbulent history of Germany, especially in the 20th century, needs no retelling here, but after the collapse of the Soviet bloc and the highly symbolic fall of the Berlin Wall, Germany flourished as a peaceful united land.

After reunification in 1990, Berlin was re-established as the capital of Germany. It is located in the eastern part of Germany, about 70 kilometers west of the border with Poland.

Today Berlin is one of the busiest capitals in Europe, a vibrant and culturally rich city with museums, galleries and parks. There are about 300 clubs, 7,000 bars and restaurants, many of which are open around the clock.

Shoppers will be in their element on the Kurfürstendamm or Friedrichstraße and should not miss KaDeWe, the department store on Wittenberg Platz, which is the largest department store on the European mainland.
Germany is the market leader in many areas of the economy. Everyone knows Siemens and car manufacturers BMW and Volkswagen. However, this country cannot be blamed for its dirty industrial landscape. Cologne, for example, is famous not only for its University Hospital of Cologne, but also known as the capital of the arts. It is also popular thanks to the largest cathedral in Germany, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Rheingarten city park and the old quarter are other attractions.

The city of Bonn is located 20 km south of Cologne and was the capital of West Germany between 1949 and 1990. Russian migrants live in Bonn, with their own special views on medicine in Germany. The University Hospital Bonn is ranked 17th in the ranking of German hospitals according to the Newsweek Report.

Along with lively cosmopolitan cities, Germany has a lot to offer and tourists can easily explore the country's natural beauty by car or train. After all, the famous autobahns are the envy of all of Europe.

Relive the fairy tale castles of Bavaria, charming medieval cities like Hameln and Trier, and over 25 World Heritage Sites.

The climate in Germany is northern European and temperate, but if you are traveling in the winter, expect a steep drop in temperature.
