The Assaf Harofeh Medical Center is a large multi-profile centre comprising an enormous number of departments. In the fourth largest Israeli clinic, there work 3,500 doctors (who are also researchers), medical and non-medical workers. They are united not only by work in one place, but also by a common goal — to provide daily professional assistance to their patients, while creating the comfort and cosiness of a real home for them. For more than 60 years, the staff has faced this a goal, and as it turned out during this time that perfection has no limits. In order to achieve this goal and to provide assistance at the international level, physicians of departments and research centres are constantly improving their specialisations. They do their own research, create new directions and clinics, take the best from their colleagues all around the world and attract well-known doctors and experienced employees to work. This is how the environment is created for effective patient care.

For 60 years, millions of outpatients and inpatients were able to confirm the effectiveness of the working model of the clinic. The recognition of the international medical community is expressed in the publication of hundreds of scientific articles of the centre in international publications and the constant attraction of researchers for conferences in the United States, Europe and Asia.

In 2014 Assaf Harofeh Medical Center was evaluated not only by patients, but also by an international commission that assessed the clinic with a JCI, confirming its international standard. Trained staff, professional doctors, modern equipment, the latest treatment methods and other requirements (over 1,300 of them), and the hospital received yet another proof of its world-class level.

Speaking about the numbers, Shamir performed 22,053 operations and 1,917 cardiac catheterisations, which is an amazing number.

The research centres include several large institutions, among which:

• The Institute of Nephrology, one of the largest in Israel, which has a unique research laboratory.
• The diabetic laboratory which is engaged in basic research on issues related to diseases. It is one of the leading laboratories in Israel and abroad.
• The Institute of Oncology which has a research laboratory and a separate department for data processing and monitoring of clinical trials.
• The Institute of Atherosclerosis which is engaged in the study of many subjects related to this common disease.
• Nursing departments; they offer unique research in the nursing care system in Israel.
