Epilepsy

The Department of Epilepsy at Hospital Clínica de Barcelona is integrated into the Clinical Institute of Neurology. The specialization of the department is aimed at improving the quality of life of patients with epilepsy and assessing surgical options for drug-resistant epilepsy.

It is one of the centers recognized by the Ministry of Health as a national referral center (CSUR) for refractory epilepsy and epilepsy surgery. It is also part of EPICARE, a European network dedicated to the study and treatment of rare and complex forms of epilepsy.

As part of the surgical program, 100-120 patients with refractory epilepsy are examined annually in the department and about 40 surgeries are performed.

Other patients, who are under observation and are not candidates for resection surgery, as well as patients with refractory epilepsy, are offered methods of neurostimulation (stimulation of the vagus nerve, deep brain, trigeminal nerve stimulation), selection of effective drug therapy under EEG control, selection of a ketogenic diet or participation in clinical trials of new drugs.

For the treatment of refractory epilepsy, the first deep brain stimulator was implanted at Hospital Clínica de Barcelona. The device has been approved by the European Medicines Agency.

The Epilepsy Department of Hospital Clínica de Barcelona was the first in the field of psychiatric evaluation of patients with epilepsy. Experts have extensively studied the impact of depression and anxiety on quality of life.

Cardiology

The Cardiology Service is part of the Clinical Institute for Cardiovascular Diseases of Hospital Clinica de Barcelona. Neurosurgery

The Neurosurgery Service is part of the Institute of Neurology at the University Hospital of Barcelona. Surgical treatment of some diseases of the central, peripheral and autonomic nervous system is carried out here.

The neurosurgical department is a highly specialized surgical service that deals with complex diseases.
The service works and interacts with such branches:
  • epilepsy;
  • cerebral vascular pathology;
  • Parkinson's disease and movement disorders.
One of the main areas of treatment is skull base surgery.

The Center for Neurosurgery has two highly specialized operating rooms equipped with modern devices of high technological complexity.

Intraoperative magnetic resonance (MRI). Allows to improve the process of brain tumors resection, pituitary tumors and cavernomas during surgery.


O-shaped hand. Intraoperative computed tomography which provides real-time intraoperative images in both two and three dimensions.


Neurobrowsers. Allow planning the surgery in advance, as well as create three-dimensional images of the brain.


Robotic observation deck (Kinevo). Improves image quality and accuracy in microscopic surgery.


Intraoperative ultrasound (iUS). Allows you to improve the process of brain tumors resection. This is a "real-time" method that allows you to see the extent of tumor removal.




Neurology

Oncohematology

The Department of Hematology, together with the Departments of Hemotherapy and Hemostasis, Medical Oncology, and Radiation Oncology, is part of the Clinical Institute of Hemato-Oncological Diseases (ICMHO).

The Center successfully treats lymphoproliferative syndromes (lymphomas), myeloproliferative syndromes, acute leukemia, multiple myeloma and amyloidosis, paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria, transplantation of hematopoietic precursor cells and other types of cell therapy.

The Center for Hemotherapy and Hemostasis provides complex treatment of hemorrhagic and thrombotic diseases or congenital pathologies of erythrocytes. Antithrombotic treatment is also carried out.

The Hemotherapy Center specializes in plasmapheresis, a method of blood purification from toxic substances, allergens, decay products. Plasmapheresis may be necessary both for the treatment and prevention of various diseases.

The Hemostasis Center specializes in helping patients with blood clotting disorders. It provides diagnostics, treatment, as well as monitoring of patients suffering from hemophilia, thrombotic diseases, as well as undergoing antithrombotic treatment. It also provides diagnostics and treatment of rare erythrocyte diseases.

The Center for Radiation Oncology specializes in the study and treatment of cancer patients for whom radiation therapy is indicated. Approximately 60% of cancer patients require radiotherapy. The department employs highly qualified specialists with extensive practical experience.

The Medical Oncology Center is constantly expanding and modernizing. The activities of the department are aimed at innovative methods for diagnosing and treating oncological diseases, as well as comprehensive care for cancer patients. Rehabilitation

The rehabilitation service is part of the Institute of Medical and Surgical Specialties of the Barcelona Clínica Hospital (ICEMEQ). The service is intended for the diagnostics and treatment of musculoskeletal system diseases on an outpatient basis. Patients who are hospitalized and require rehabilitation treatment are also monitored.

Physical medicine and rehabilitation specialists help patients who, due to illness or injury, experience pain, temporary or permanent loss of physical or sensory functions.

The purpose of such treatment is to minimize the consequences of diseases, improve the physical condition of each patient.
